Why Learn Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity protects the sensitive digital information of companies and their consumers from online attacks. Those working in cybersecurity are quick thinking, able to assess risks, and adaptive at staying ahead of vulnerabilities in systems. With an ever-growing demand, cybersecurity has a zero percent unemployment rate and offers a wide range of specializations, including government pathways. Cybersecurity professionals have the potential to earn more as they obtain higher security clearances and certifications.

The Demand for Cyber Talent

There are many opportunities in Illinois and across the United States. According to research from cyberseek.org, in the Chicago area alone, there are currently over 16,000 open cybersecurity roles and a very low supply of cybersecurity talent.

Nationally, there are over half a million cyber jobs that employers are trying to fill. Businesses actively seeking cybersecurity professionals span across all industries and sizes, and they include local high-tech employers like Google, AT&T, and Amazon, to name a few.

These companies are hiring for roles like IT Help Desk Specialist, Systems Support Specialist, and Cybersecurity Analyst. Grads studying the UIC Cybersecurity Bootcamp curriculum have been hired for all of these roles—and more.
